Visiting Ngorongoro

This is a tick-list destination, one place that you probably should see. It has a reputation not only for incredible scenery and game viewing, but also for large crowds. Nevertheless, we have chosen an excellent option and itinerary to see the best of the crater in a quaint and attractive little tented camp……

The first time you see the crater from its rim, you are spellbound by the enormous scale of this extinct volcano. Place you binoculars to your eyes and you soon realize that the crater floor is absolutely full of game standing almost shoulder to shoulder. The game viewing here is exceptional (and easy) and there will be little doubt in spotting all of the sought after animals in one game drive.

Our recommendation is to base yourself at Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp for 2 nights. This little tented camp is tucked away under umbrella-like acacia trees in a mountain-side forest. From here, you can relax and take a very early morning drive to the crater floor. You can do some game viewing before the masses of tourists arrive on day trips later in the day. This will be more than enough time to enjoy the crater, its spectacular views and the wildlife. After returning to camp, the comforts and warmth (you will be at altitude) of Crater Camp will be most welcome. The next day you move on to you next destination by connecting with a charter flight out of the nearest airstrip at Manyara town, roughly a 2 hour drive away.

A visit to the crater fits in well with the “Northern circuit” with connecting flights to Arusha and the Serengeti.
