KGH in a Nutshell

This great little guest house is so well priced that it provides opportunities for those on a tighter budget to experience amazing game viewing in a prime wildlife area. You can design your stay according to your budget with activities available on demand, and you pay on location. This is not a full-on bush lodge mind, as it is set in the heart of Khwai village. It is however, only a 2 minute drive from the Moremi gate (North gate) and you can access the Khwai Concession immediately for even more game viewing possibilities. Further, you can choose your “board” basis and save with B+B rates!

How to Get There

Khwai guest house is located inside the Khwai concession, which borders the Moremi Game Reserve. You can fly into the well used Khwai airstrip from just about any other bush airstrip. We like this camp because it is also accessible by road on a self drive safari or as part of your itinerary on a mobile safari. It takes about 3-4 hours to reach KGH from Maun.

Game Viewing and Activities

You can be independent here and do your own activities using KGH as your base (if you drive to KGH). You can also book and pay direct from a menu of activities provided out of the guest house.

The main attraction from KGH is the high quality game drives in the Khwai concession. This is a top quality destination, especially for habituated predators. Every year in winter (June – August), wild dogs tend to den in the Khwai area. This makes for some of the best wild dog viewing in Africa! There have been some years where up to 3 packs of dogs have been utilizing this concession!

The Moremi park gate is a mere 5 minute drive from the camp, so game drives are also conducted inside the park.

These are the activities you can book direct at KGH:

  • 3hr game drive in Khwai Concession
  • 3hr game drive in Moremi
  • Full day game drives
  • 2.5 hour mokoro activity on Sable Alley River
  • Night drive
  • Cultural experience

Camp Environment

This camp is simple yet functional, with no excessive comforts. As already stated, it is located inside Khwai village, so you must be prepared to see and hear noises and sights of both animals and rural village life. KGH has been around for a few years but was recently bought by a very successful local lodge and mobile safari operator called Bush Ways Safaris. They invested money into the site and as with all their properties, the results are excellent.

The overall decor is a blend of a traditional African theme with a stylish and welcoming modern touch. This is therefore a very cosy base for exploring the surrounding bush on a tighter budget. The main area has a spacious dining room with a concrete floor and canvas roof. There is decent furniture and thought-out space where you can sit and relax and dine. Further, they have kept the grounds of the guest house fairly “traditional” with sandy paths and an open fire area to enjoy in the evenings.

There is an adequately competent management team and very capable cooks on site to look after you as well as guides nearby should you want to do activities. The site is fenced (electric) to keep animals out, unlike most bush lodges which have to remain unfenced by law.

The thatched chalets are efficiently small but not cramped – there is more than enough space to fit in all the necessities. You can be assured of clean, more than comfortable accommodation in these chalets with well appointed facilities including flush toilets and hot showers, a small safe and an electric fan. Further, the thatched roofs help to keep the chalets nice and cool. There is no power grid here so the guest house runs entirely on solar.

What We Think

As already stated this is a great choice for the budget, independent traveler. However, it also suits those that may also be on a fly-in safari that require full board – all your needs can be taken care of, including a road transfer from Maun should you not want to fly in! It works well on our mobile safari itineraries and we really love the independence one can have when based at KGH. You can do varied activities here but unfortunately, just not boating. The Khwai Concession is highly, highly productive – we think this location is excellent (even though inside a village!) One improvement would be a swimming pool!
