Khwai River Lodge in a Nutshell

If you are looking for indulgence in the bush, then this should be a good choice of lodge for you. Khwai River Lodge is owned by a world renowned hotel company – Belmond. Therefore, similar international standards have been maintained out in the Khwai wilderness. To sum up the standard of this lodge, each luxurious tent has air conditioning! This is something that you would really appreciate in October, our hottest month. With all of this luxury, you also get dramatic game drives in the productive Khwai concession.

How to Get There

You can fly into the well used Khwai airstrip from just about any other bush airstrip. We like this camp because it is also accessible by road on a self drive safari or as part of your itinerary on a mobile safari.

Game Viewing and Activities

The main attraction from Khwai River Lodge is the high quality game drives in the Khwai concession. This is a top quality destination, especially for habituated predators. Every year in winter (June – August), wild dogs tend to den in the Khwai area. This makes for some of the best wild dog viewing in Africa! There have been some years where up to 3 packs of dogs have been utilizing this concession!

The Moremi park gate is a mere 15 minute drive from the camp, so game drives are also conducted inside the park.

Guides at Khwai River Lodge will conduct night drives in the concession.

Camp Environment

Belmond safaris have several camps in Botswana, all catering for clientele looking for complete comfort in genuine wilderness areas. Tents are large, spacious and well appointed with full air conditioning. In winter this air conditioning unit can double as a heater!

Wifi is available in camp as well as alfresco dining at your own private table. You can spa in the middle of the day, and even do lengths in what must be the Okavango’s largest swimming pool. We like the splendid vistas from this camp, over-looking the Khwai River and it’s floodplains – usually teeming with bull elephants and plains game.

They have just updated the camp library with lots of up to date coffee table books and other interesting reads about Africa.

We like the dining arrangement here. Your group or each couple gets their own table – no forced conversation (You can socialise around the fire after dinner). Dinner is on a menu with a few choices for each course of a 3 course meal. That means there are no set meal times: If you are out on a drive, you eat when you get back. This greatly adds to the game viewing experience as meal times don’t force you to leave a sighting or return to camp.

What we think?

Air conditioning in 40 degree heat? It is a welcome relief……however, not an absolute necessity.

We like that you get your own table when dining and you can turn up to lunch or dinner whenever you want – there is no forced dining with other guests.

The Khwai concession is one of the best wildlife viewing areas in the country!

The swimming pool is long enough to do laps – great if you want to do some exercise.

There is a relaxed atmosphere in this camp – you pretty much get left alone to relax as you want….no forced interactions…..
