Qorokwe in a Nutshell

Qorokwe is a new camp located in the lower reaches or the Okavango Delta, just South of the Moremi Game Reserve. This is a former hunting area that has thankfully switched over to photographic tourism. The well-established Chitabe Camp (also of Wilderness Safaris) is nearby and so the high standards of game viewing should be reciprocated at Qorokwe – this is also a lodge choice for high quality dry-land game viewing!

Game viewing and activities

This is a hioghly productive dry-land game viewing lodge! Qorokwe is bordered by two rivers (The Gomoti and Santantadebi), which usually burst their banks during each flood season, flooding surrounding floodplains. Being in the lower reaches of the Delta, this area can be inundated with water or completely dry. However, what makes the game viewing so productive is that there always remains a significant, high dry-land area that supports the full range of predators and large game species. So you come here to tick off these sought after animals!

These predator rich areas are complemented by a fantastic variety of other habitats – large river channels for the very aquatic species, shallower seasonal floodplains for the semi-aquatics and beautiful riverine woodland and palm fringed island for cover, bird nesting sites and fruiting trees. You can be sure of a complete game viewing experience in this concession because of the various habitat types!

Game drives are the staple activity here, both day and night. Seasonal boating and mokoro activities are on offer when the flood comes in (varies year to year).

As said, if you only had time on your safari for one camp, this could be it?

Camp Environment

This is new camp (as of 2018) and is therefore modern and up-to-date in terms of solar power and waste disposal – you can rest assured your impact will be minimal here! The design is fresh as they have done away with thatched roofs and gumpole structures, opting instead for a lineal outlay of steel  structures with wooden roofs and flooring. The result is a beautiful and spacious lodge with a contemporary feel.

The views from this camp are tremendous as the location is shared with a deep lagoon in front of camp. There are sweeping views across an open floodplain, so sightings of hippo and other animals from camp are also possible. Naturally, the main buildings are open-sided to take advantage of these vistas and modern, well-placed  furnishings means you can enjoy these sights while dining, lounging in a comfortable sofa, or sitting by the swimming pool.

The “tented rooms” are excellent and spacious. They are modern, well-appointed and well lit. Each unit is raised on a wooden deck and again supported by steel and wooden structures with flat topped roofs. Each has large “screen doors” that slide open to take advantage of the perfect views in front of camp. Each “room” comprises en-suite facilities with separate toilet, indoor shower, indoor bath and double vanity basin. There is a private viewing deck with outdoor seating, indoor lounge area, luggage rack, mosquito screen sliding doors and mosquito net, writing desk and chair, tea and coffee making facilities, electronic safe, multi-plug adaptor with USB points, an umbrella, yoga mat, weights and hairdryer.

There is no air-conditioning, however, ceiling and pedestal fans are provided in all the rooms. Bathrobes, slippers, liquid soap, body wash, shampoo and conditioner, body lotion, room spray, insect repellent, insect spray, shower caps, vanity kit, tissue dispenser, washing detergent (on request), sewing kit (on request) and laundry bag are supplied in each room.

What we think

We like the fact that some of the camp owners (in a partnership with Wilderness Safaris) are involved with the day-to-day running of the camp. you might even meet them in camp, which can give the place a more personalised feel.

Game is good, top-quality in fact……we would send you here for this.

It is a modern camp, beautifully styled, a bit of a break away from what may seem old-fashioned now.
