Footsteps in a Nutshell

This is a rustic camp and that is the reason why we really like it – simplistic luxury (almost like a “mobile camp”) with all the necessary comforts you would need in the bush. If you are keen to do some walking, then Footsteps would be a good choice – there are no distractions here, just the opportunity to walk. Ker and Downey Safaris, also run their “Young Explorers” program out of Footsteps, where families can book the whole camp for exclusive use. Specialist guides are provided for the children.

How to Get There

Most people fly into Footsteps using the nearby airstrip. You can fly in from Maun (30 minutes) or Kasane (1 hour). Flying in to this lodge is an event in itself as you get to see the Okavango from the air. Guests can also choose to boat into this camp from Moremi.

Game Viewing and Activities

This camp can take on two forms:

Footsteps Across the Delta: Although they do offer occasional drives, this camp places a massive emphasis on walking. There is a minimum age of 16 years because of the emphasis on walking activities and mokoros are also available when flood waters are high enough. As would be expected, the guides here are experienced “walking guides” and carry rifles for extra safety.

Young Explorers Club: This camp offers great packages for families of any number with kids at least older than 7 years. Guides with many years of experience in guiding children are provided and structured activities are based around the children having safe fun in the bush. This could be anything from making a bow and arrow to catching and cooking their own fish!

Camp Environment

This camp is open for only part of the year (March – November), and closes for the rain season. The Meru tents are on the ground as there are no raised decks. The main area is a canvas shelter with a dining table and well stocked bar: this is a “grassroots” safari camp! Footsteps has its own chef and the food is excellent and certainly filling. There is no swimming pool here but a private iron bathtub goes down well after a day of walking.

We like the basic style of this camp as it gives guests an experience that is far closer to nature while still maintaining a certain level of comfort.

Footsteps Camp is owned by Ker and Downey Safaris and is one of a portfolio of well located lodges owned by the same group. You can therefore pick up good discounts when combining with other related camps on their safari circuit. In the same area, and more suited for game drives, is Shinde Camp.
